I am from south west Ga and I've never trained or owned a coon hound before, however I have trained my share of labs and bird dogs. I bought a female black and tan this past February so she's knocking on a year old. I started her on a coon tail at first but I noticed she was a little timid then so I backed off with it. My brother bought her litter mate they are both are paper dogs and come from good stock. He brought a dead coon home a couple days ago and his male attacked it the time he saw it and would also track and tree it while my gyp walked around with her tail between her legs. She has never been mistreated at all. My brother is wanting to show them a live caged coon but I don't want to mess up my female by doing this. Any advice provided by experienced Hunters/trainers will be greatly appreciated please HELP!!!!!

Some times a good thing to put them with a live coon and get bit she will go to bed and dream of it and start to hate coons and want to track and kill them

shootatakedown !!!!!You are right. If he wants her to be a coon dog you can do that. I was told by an old timer about that. He told me on training a dog if there is no intrest in training with scent or a dead coon. He told me to put a live coon in the pin with the dog the coon will eat the dog food and when the dog get hungrey enough the dog will kill the coon. From then on the dog will hate coons and will try and get and kill any coon he can find.He also told me the last dog he did this to it only took 3 days and the coon was dead this was the best dog he had. ALSO make sure she is up to date on shoots before you do this.

Noticed this was an old post. Probably either solved or gotten rid of, but I had to reply. Had sister mates out of well bred Walker. One was all you could ask for. Other shy, seem scared of own shadow. Got these pups at 8 weeks old, so I know both were well treated and cared for. Tried it all to get the shy one to respond. NOTHING. I gave her to a young teenager. This kid never had a coon dog and knew nothing about training one. She started treeing housecats, then squirrels. Long story short we hunted together when hound was almost 2 years old. SOLID coon dog, but when you shot coon out she'd back off. Growl, bay, but just wouldn't fight. Asked him how he got her to hunt out as good as she was and he said he didn't do anything. Was squirrel hunting late one evening and she treed a coon on way out. Ever since she hunt coon at night, and was one of the best squirrel hounds around. Just goes to show you never can tell. She started late and would always be a little shy, but he wouldn't have taken a million dollars for her. Sometimes we try and force a hound to do or not do and would have been better to back off. Almost sure if a live coon would have been put on her it would have ruined her. What works with one hound won't work with another.
If you still have her and want to get rid of her post it and I'll respond.
